How can you rank first on Pinterest? Is that the question you were looking for?
Well, in todayโ€™s video I will show you how you can rank high in Pinterest search results and why you donโ€™t necessarily need to rank #1 to get a ton of traffic from this platform!

Obviously, what makes your pin rank high in Pinterest search results is your Pinterest SEO (search engine optimization for keywords). And in case you donโ€™t have it yet, I will give you a link to my Pinterest SEO Checklist for free at the end of this video. Stay tuned for this link!

And now, letโ€™s dive into the training!

You have to understand that even though Pinterest is a search engine, it also has pretty important features of a social media platform. And itโ€™s also a VISUAL search engine.

Pinterest search results are very different from what you can see on Google, and user behavior is also very different.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that the majority of Pinterest users are on mobile apps, they are not on desktop computers.

So how does the user experience actually look like on Pinterest?
I open my Pinterest app and search for a keyword โ€œvegan recipesโ€

The first type of results that Pinterest is currently pushing quite hard especially on mobile devices โ€“ a block of video pins. Then I start scrolling and looking for inspiration.

How many results I will probably scroll down until something catches my attention? Well, according to Pinterestโ€™s official stats, on average, users see about 60 pins per search query.

You heard that right I said 60, which is 6 โ€“ 0 which is about 6 pages of search results on Google.

Can you imagine yourself going through 60 search results on Google? Of course not! Thatโ€™s because Pinterest is a visual search engine. Visual information gets into your brains so much faster than text. In Google search results, you have to read the text, process that information before you take a decision to click on one result or the other.

What are the sources of text information attached to a pin which Pinterest is using to understand your pin and rank it in search results?
So Pinterest team shows the text sources in this exact order. Do you think itโ€™s also the order or importance of each text source? I think it is!

1. Pin title, description, url
2. Board name and description
3. Page title and description of the link
4. Search queries that frequently lead to clicks on the Pin
5. Names of objects detected in the image using a visual classifier

The last point is very interesting because Pinterest tells us that the platform has a visual classifier in which visual objects on the images, have specific names attached to them. So when Pinterest is ranking your pin, the image content can also influence how high your pin will rank for the focus keyword.

So what I mean here is that if your pin is about blogging, itโ€™s not a good idea to have in the pin image food or anything else that has nothing to do with blogging. A laptop or a notebook, or an office desk would be probably a better background image for this niche. You are better of using pins with no background image than using irrelevant images that will only confuse Pinterest algorithm.
