Well, I’m doing alright, I guess, but my company’s website is just is not ranking as highly as it should.

Well, I’ve created my website about 4 months ago, but it is only on Page 3, still.

Yeah, I know. Nobody is going to find me on Page 3, but I just don’t know what to do.

Are you creating links to your website from other websites, otherwise known as backlinks?

Yes, I am.

Are you creating as many backlinks to your site as you possibly can?

Yeah, I think so. Why do you ask?

Well, I know that you created several test sites while you were first learning.

Awwww….You mean THOSE junky sites? I’m pretty embarrassed by them, especially now that I know more about making good websites.

Do you have backlinks to your website from those test websites you created while you were learning?

No…Why would I? Those were junk!

Those test websites might not be anything that you want too many people to see, but they can link to your website that you have today. Remember, the more backlinks you have to your website, the better chance you have of getting a higher ranking on Google.

Wow, Frank. I never thought of that. I have about 10 of those sites, too.

Creating these extra backlinks to your site probably won’t make your website jump to the top of your targeted search, but they might help give you a boost.

But what if Google does not like my links from these other sites?

Certainly, nobody really knows what Google expects or demands, but basic SEO internet marketing principles tell us that you can create good links.

Really? How could I possibly do that?

Well, since you no longer really care about people seeing these websites, you can write something within each of these websites that relates to your website’s topic.

Hmmm…..Relates to my website’s topic? That is interesting!

Yeah. You can include a link within what you write, or you can make an anchor text link. You know–that text that you can click, and it takes you to another part of the page or a different page, altogether.

Does it matter what text I choose to use as that clickable anchor text?

Well…It would be a good idea to choose text that relates to the search phrase that you want to rank.

So….Should I use the same anchor text on all of my test sites?

If I want to rank for a specific keyword, why would I want to make anchor text using other words?

Besides having content material that writes more naturally, which Google usually prefers, it also gives you a better chance to be ranked for other keyword search phrases.
