Creating an Internal Linking Strategy for SEO
1.) Make Your Internal Links Natural (2:53)
You want to make sure that you are only inserting internal links where they make sense and where they are appropriate. Too many bloggers overdo it with their internal links, which makes their posts/pages look cluttered to visitors and unnatural to Google. You really want to implement your internal links where you think they will help people navigate your site more effectively and find more helpful content. Keep this natural!
2.) Use Keyword Rich/Relevant Anchor Text (3:42)
Use relevant anchor text to encourage users to click-through to other pages on your website. You can use certain keywords as well, as long as you don’t abuse the same keyword/anchor text combo time after time. Just like step #1, keep your anchor text natural and only use keywords/phrases that make sense.
3.) Incorporate Internal Linking into any New Blog Content (4:46)
You should look to incorporate internal links with every new piece of content your produce. Get into the habit of identifying opportunities where you can internally link to other blog posts as you’re writing new content. Overtime, this can really start to create an excellent internal linking architecture which will be beneficial to your readers and SEO.
4.) Update Old Blog Posts with Internal Links (5:43)
This step alone is incredibly powerful and should be a strategy that you re-visit time and time again. Go through some of your old blog content and update these articles with additional internal links (again, keep this natural). Many times older blog posts have a higher page authority (due to age and links being built to them) and can be a great way to spread some link juice to newer posts or posts you’d like to rank highly for. Updating old blog posts with internal links can really help boost your search engine rankings in the long-run.
5.) Give It Time to Work its Magic (7:20)
Like any SEO strategy, please give your internal linking time to work its magic. It can take Google a little while to recognize the changes made on your website and credit you for them. This should be an on-going and really never ending process as long as you’re a blogger. So be patient and stick with this for the long-haul!
