Imagine the experience of having a perfect internet connection in every corner of your house. Even when you start walking across different floors of your house. So Google wifi tries to achieve that by using a very old idea: the mesh network. But how exactly does mesh network really work? google router
First, we need to start from the Point to point network. You are already using this setup in your home. More specifically, you have a router that connects a device to the internet whether this is your phone, computer or tablet. google wifi
This setup has the advantage of faster internet because we have direct connection with the access point to the internet. On the other hand, if your room is in the corner of the house (Which by the way is my home situation) you should find another way to have Facebook on your computer. mesh network tutorial mesh wifi
So a solution is to install an Ethernet cable from the router to your laptop. But you still donโt have internet on your phone.
The solution to all this is the mesh network or else the Google Wifi. The main idea is extremely simple and elegant. In this setup, you have many routers or else nodes that create a complex network. For example, here you can see the topology and the connection between the nodes. When a device wants to connect to send a package of information on the internet, the network will send the package with the fastest way possible to the node that is connected to the internet. In this example, the package should do 3 hops. There are many algorithms that are used such as OLSR or BATMAN. But we will not go in depth about this. mesh wifi
Letโs assume that your device is here, so this is the node that you are connected. And you want to send a package. The package will start from here and then the network will identify that this node is not working. In this case, the mesh network has the capacity of self-healing. google routerIn other words, it will find another way to send the information to the internet node. For example, it will go from here. This is a very important property, especially in a company where the internet should work without lost connections. At the same time, the network will accept any new nodes without any changes in the algorithm. It can detect in real time which are the closest nodes and start serving any devices which are nearby. On the other hand, this setup can have problem with the internet speed. In contrast with the point to point setup, the information should jump through many nodes. For example, in the case of this topology, this node will have more traffic than this node. So the internet connection for this device will be better than the internet for this device. mesh network tutorial
But this is just my assumption for this technology.
