Instructions for Putting in a New Pool Liner

Above-ground pool owners are well-versed in the effort and cost required to care for their backyard paradise, a.k.a. the swimming pool. Maintaining proper chemical levels and keeping the pool free of debris and mineral deposits is essential for maximizing the liner’s lifespan. But what do you do when the pool liner has seen better days and has to be replaced before damage from a leak or rip could put your home in jeopardy?

The homeowner can choose from a variety of solutions to this problem. A new liner could be installed by a professional, but the price could be out of reach if compared to the cost of the liner. You could have the kid next door do it, but that runs the risk of damaging the liner and increasing your repair costs. Would you do it yourself if you could avoid the hassle and expense? I can show you how simple this task actually is.

Preparing the pool for the new installation is the first stage. This requires removing the old liner, draining the pool, and arranging for a new liner to be installed. It will be necessary to assess the pool’s condition before deciding how to drain the water. Renting a submersible pump and directing the water to a nearby storm drain may be necessary. Before proceeding with anything, make sure you know the rules in your area. The old liner needs to be removed, which necessitates taking apart the top cap of the pool wall. When finished, the liner should be disposed of properly. Look for corrosion or other damage to the pool walls that could end up damaging the new liner. Fix everything broken to make sure the installation goes well. Consider the pool’s depth in addition to its diameter (or length and width) while shopping for a new liner. Based on these measurements, we can ask for a liner of the appropriate size. Do not automatically choose the cheapest liner without doing some research. The mil thickness of the material is directly related to the liner’s durability and the length of the guarantee. It’s possible to find liners of at least 20 mil thickness. The upfront investment with thicker liners will be higher, but they will last significantly longer. A liner with a mil thickness of less than 20 should be avoided since it is more easily torn and ruined by chemicals.

When the pool is ready for the new liner to be installed, you can unpack the liner, taking care to avoid damaging the vinyl by stumbling over staples or other debris. For proper liner placement inside the pool, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Liner seams should align at wall/floor/ground junctions. If there are a few creases in the liner, don’t sweat it; they’ll disappear after the pool is filled.

Once the liner is in the right place, you can start getting everything ready to be filled. The liner is pulled evenly over the pool’s walls until only a small section in the liner’s center is still touching the ground. For the time being, we’ll only drape the liner over the side walls. The top cap of the pool wall should be replaced over the liner, but not fastened in place. The liner will be supported in this way while it is filled. Start filling it up now. Remove sections of the top cap at regular intervals (when the water level starts to draw on the liner) to bring more of the liner into touch with the ground. Spread out equally around the perimeter of the pool. This will provide a wrinkle-free pool liner and bottom. Support it better by moving the cap back up. Do this until the entire pool floor is covered in water. Make sure the seams are flush with the walls and adjust as needed. After the entire pool has been filled with water to a depth of 6 inches and the liner has been properly positioned, the top cap of the pool wall can be securely fastened. Keep filling up the pool until it reaches the desired level.

Also, you might want to prime the pump before turning it on. It’s not a good idea to risk damage by running the pump dry.

Celebrate your success and give yourself a pat on the back. You may now start reaping the rewards of having a pool again.
