Backlinks, in their simplest form, are links from one web page to another. Backlinks can also be explained from an hyperlink perspective, with the difference being that backlinks are between two web addresses, both utilizing the http:// protocol.
More specifically, backlinks are the links pointing to a webpage from either other internal or external webpages. So, if you write a blog post and link to a Wikipedia page from within it, that’ll be a backlink for the Wikipedia page.
So, why are backlinks so important? Well, backlinks solved a huge problem – sorting the bad content from the good on the Internet. When Google’s co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed the concept of PageRank and later implemented it in the search engine they created in 1998, Google, the entire search engine game changed drastically.
Before the arrival of Google and the invention of PageRank, websites used to be ranked simply based on how many times they mentioned a keyword or key phrase within their contents. But, after Google became mainstream, most of the international competitors faced a huge problem in competing against Google, and sooner or later they all developed their own link-based algorithms, inspired by Google – but they weren’t ever able to catch Google.
The fundamental idea behind switching from keyword relevance (entirely) to link-assisted keyword relevance is that backlinks are harder to replicate and hence a link-based algorithm is harder to manipulate. This was done to prevent black-hat keyword stuffer SEOs from doing anything they want.
Today, when it comes to SEO, there are two types of backlinks:
Links that comply with Google’s quality guidelines, a.k.a. the White Hat Links.
Links that violate Google’s quality guidelines, a.k.a. the Black Hat Links.
Ideally, you shouldn’t actually be building links according to Google. That roughly translates to: don’t do anything with a clear goal of manipulating Google’s algorithms into thinking that your content is more valuable than of your competition.
Of course, link building can be mis-interpreted. Long-term link building in today’s age is no longer all about spamming your link in hundreds of different sites. Quality of links is more important than quantity. But one thing is certain, no matter how many times Google advises people to post great content and wait and watch the links come freely – that’s simply not how it works. At the very least, you need to reach out to fellow content writers, your readers, and potentially interested sites to give your content piece an intial backlinks boost.
