If you’ve only ever worked with conventional string inverters, switching to a module-optimized solution like SolarEdge may seem like a giant leap. PV installers may also find this to be a freeing experience. The usual design processes can be omitted entirely with a SolarEdge installation, providing the installer unprecedented freedom. This is an essential guide to the changes you’ll experience when installing your first SolarEdge PV system, which includes several aspects that many installers new to the technology are not yet completely aware of.
We advise always having your device connected to the internet. Though your client will still enjoy the system’s shade-resistance benefits without this, it is recommended that you join the approach to the Internet if possible. Accessing the free SolarEdge monitoring portal online lets you and your customer keep tabs on the system down to the module level. It is beneficial to have SolarEdge’s remote troubleshooting capabilities during the first few installations if something goes wrong. The inverter connects to the home’s router via an Ethernet cable or the Zigbee wireless protocol. Many installers use Netgear Ethernet to connect devices across power lines; At the same time, this setup typically functions without a hitch; it is essential to note that SolarEdge does not officially support this option.
The SolarEdge OP250 250W Grid Optimizer is compatible with the most commercially available 60-cell 250Wp solar PV modules. However, a new optimizer is required for more excellent power modules like the upcoming LG Neon or thin-film modules like the Solar Frontier. In other words, if you want to set up a test rig in your office, you can have a string with two Hyundai 250s, two LG Neon 300s, two Solar Frontier 155s, two Kyocera 190s, and two UpSolar 245s, all on the exact line.
Maximum string voltage and standard string construction are unnecessary considerations. It doesn’t matter which modular panel you use; the outcome is the same. Each string in a single-phase system can contain no more than 25 optimizers or a maximum current of 15A. The optimal number of optimizers per string for three-phase systems is between 15 and 50, or 15A. A 16-module system, for instance, may have six panels on the east roof, five on the south top, and five on the west roof, and they could all be connected to the exact string. Be mindful of falling short of the needed minimum of 8 modules by accidentally placing seven on each line (for instance, on a 14-panel east-west system).
All 14 panels should ideally be connected to the same wire. You can choose between two options for an east-west 16-panel layout.
For the system to function, six optimizers must be at work. In an 8-module system, for instance, no more than two modules can be fully shaded. Hence, the design should always ensure that at least six modules receive adequate sunshine to generate some power.
The DC power line is used to communicate between optimizers and inverters. As a result, there is no potential for wireless interference, as there is no need to set up additional communication lines.
Before installing and connecting the PV modules, ensure all optimizers are securely fastened to the mounting rail. The optimizers can be attached to our regular Alpha rail using a Rail to Roof Hook Connection Kit and an extra washer, just like a module clamp. Once everything is set up, remember where on the layout the optimizers are. The optimizers come with detachable stickers that may be placed on a design page. A barcode-scanning iPhone app is also available for tracking purposes. To get the SolarEdge app, click here. Sending the plan to SolarEdge will allow the company to place an accurate representation of your system’s modules on its monitoring website.
The optimizers generate A’safe’s 1 V voltage when disconnected from the inverter, which is used for fire prevention. Letting you determine how many optimizers are actively processing data for you. If there are 12 lights on a string and sunlight is hitting them, then the voltage on the line should read 12 V. A connection error could occur if this is not the case. The system’s functionality is unaffected by an inefficient optimizer. Incorrect module-to-optimizer connection is the leading cause of SolarEdge failure. Ensure the string voltage is equal to the number of optimizers you have installed, as disabling one will not affect the operation of the others.
The incomplete pairing will occur if the room is too dim. If the installation is delayed, no worries; pairing can be done remotely as long as the inverter is online.
If you need to troubleshoot an installation that does not have internet access, you should purchase a 3G router. Cost-effectively grant SolarEdge remote access to any trouble spots using 3G routers like Zoom, which connect to the internet via your smartphone.
